In this blog, you will find all true and real information about the Republic Day of India such as: what is Republic Day? Why do we celebrate 26 January as Republic Day? Who will be the chief guest of Republic Day 2025 in India? Republic Day importance, and the Importance of the Constitution of the Supreme God.

What Is Republic Day?

Republic Day is observed to honor the day on which the constitution of India came into effect on 26 January. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country. Republic Day 2025 will be celebrated as the 75th Republic Day of India and it is falling on Thursday, 26th of January. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar is considered as the “Father of the Constitution of India”.

Why Do We Celebrate 26 January As Republic Day?

India got independence on 15 August 1947 from British rule. After that, the process of drafting the constitution of India was started. It took 2 years, 11 months and 18 days to draft the constitution and finally on 26 January 1950 the constitution of our country came into force and India became a republic. That is why we celebrate 26 January as Republic Day every year, to commemorate the historic day.

India gained independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, but did not yet have a permanent constitution. The country was governed under the colonial Government of India Act, 1935. To establish a framework for governing an independent nation, the Constituent Assembly of India was formed, comprising members from diverse regions and communities.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Constitution, led the Drafting Committee. After nearly three years of deliberation, the final draft was adopted on November 26, 1949, and came into effect on January 26, 1950. The date, January 26th, was chosen to honor the Purna Swaraj Declaration of 1930, when the Indian National Congress proclaimed complete independence from British rule.

Every year, Republic Day celebrations center around a theme reflecting contemporary issues. In 2025, the theme is “Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas,” emphasizing the nation’s journey of preserving its heritage while fostering development. The tableaux from various states and government departments will depict this theme, showcasing India’s cultural richness and developmental achievements.

In 2025, India will celebrate its 76th Republic Day.  The theme for the Republic Day Parade is “Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas” (Golden India: Heritage and Development), highlighting the nation’s rich cultural heritage and developmental strides.  Approximately 10,000 special guests, referred to as “architects of ‘Swarnim Bharat’,” have been invited to witness the parade at Kartavya Path in New Delhi.  These guests come from diverse backgrounds and include top performers in various fields and beneficiaries of government schemes.

What Is the Importance of the Constitution of India

The constitution of India is the largest constitution in the world. It lays down the foundation of the political code, duties, procedures and powers of the government, fundamental rights and duties of the citizens.

The reasons why a constitution is needed could be listed as below

  • To establish a set of rules that allows maximum coordination among the members of the society.
  • To establish a decision making authority in a society.
  • To set limits on government and thereby prevent it from trespassing on the fundamental rights of citizens.
  • To help the government to attain the aspirations of the society and create conducive conditions for a society to be just for its citizens.

Interesting Facts About Republic Day

  1. Longest Constitution: India’s Constitution is the most detailed in the world.
  1. First President’s Address: Dr. Rajendra Prasad gave the first presidential address after the Constitution came into effect.
  1. Foreign Chief Guests: Every year, a foreign dignitary is invited to the Republic Day parade. In 2025, the newly-elected Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is expected to be the chief guest, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Indonesia.
  1. First Republic Day Parade: The first parade was held in 1950 at Irwin Stadium (now Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium).

Are the Citizens Really Abiding by the Constitution?

Does the celebration of the Republic Day make people aware of our constitutional rights and duties? Sadly, the answer is NO. 73 years after the first Republic Day the constitution has lost its power to those in power. Corruption is increasing day by day. Bribery has become a normal business. Rapes and murder attempts on rape victims rock the nation every other day. No wonder India ranks 85th among the ‘most corrupt’ and 9th ‘most unsafe country for women’ in the world.
