The afflicted person roams here and there, goes to the ritualists, astrologers, religious narrators to obtain relief and comfort but seldom he finds. People believe themselves to be cramped due to destiny but the reality is contrary to it. Know how a real satguru can exterminate accounts of all types of karmas and vouchsafe happiness.
Definition of a Satguru
Satguru in its literal sense is a True (Sat) Spiritual leader (Guru) who realizes the Supreme Almighty Satpurush, the creator of the universe; who brings the disciples’ sufferings to an end; who fortifies admirers to repudiate all evils; whose life’s purpose is to impart tactically the true path of reverence; who initiates souls to attain Supreme God; who is the personification of God and reveals the unrevealed truth.
How to Identify a Satguru?
A Satguru is identified by his knowledge substantiated by the holy scriptures. He and his disciples dwell unitedly without the discrimination based on caste, creed, and color. Often the seekers find it difficult to identify a real Satguru and fallaciously acquire ritual performers, religious narrators or astrologers who are easily available in their vicinity. This article aims to set a yardstick by which a tenacious seeker of the truth can find a perfect Satguru.
Devotees Are Duped by Fake Gurus
Time and again it is difficult to draw a line between a Religious Preacher and a True Spiritual Master (Satguru). An individual is spiritual when he attaches the faith of his spirit or soul with a Supreme soul irrespective of his religious faith. He believes in the power of the higher order which controls this entire universe. The religious preachers talk about the rituals and ways to offer worship to their gods mostly for material gains.
Sometimes they breed hatred in the hearts of the devotees against other religions. These gurus claim to possess miraculous powers and demonstrate marvels. The Satguru is one in a millennium and the spirituality is beyond miracles. Many times the religious gurus become barriers in the path of seekers for reaching to a Satguru.
Who are the Greatest Spiritual Leaders in India Today? —Satguru as Defined in Holy Scriptures
- A Satguru in Hinduism is greeted as Tatvdarshi Sant or Dheeranam. Shrimad Bhagawad Gita (BG 4:34) instructs to go in His refuge; prostrate before Him in reverence and ask politely for knowledge about the Supreme God; to follow devotion as directed by Him.
- Satguru in Christianity is a ‘Messiah’/ a messenger of God who is an agent of God who preaches the path of salvation. Jesus Christ acknowledged John the Baptist as his Satguru.
- Satguru in Islam is called a ‘Bakhabar’/’Illamwala’ (Quran Sharif Surat-Al-Furkan chapter 25 Aayat no. 52-59) who is the knower of great God-Allahu Akbar. The Quran does not reveal ‘Allahu Akbar’ fully but directs to take refuge in Satguru to learn intimately.
- In Sikh religion’s holy scripture Shri Guru Granth Sahib page 721 in Mehla 1 “Hakka Kabir Kareem tu, Be-aeb Parvardigar” here, Shri Nanak Dev Ji glorifies his Satguru Kabir Saheb as supreme power, the kind God, flawless, the nurturer of all.
Glorifying Satguru, Almighty Kabir in Sukshm Ved says “Guru bin kahu naa paya gyana”
means a devotee cannot understand spiritual knowledge without Satguru.
Characteristics of a Satguru
Let us see how the Holy scriptures characterize a perfect spiritual leader.
- Yajurveda Adhyay 19 Mantra 25 describes a beneficent Saint who elaborates the encrypted sentences by deciphering them.
- In Shrimad Bhagwad Gita (BG17:23) ‘OM- TAT- SAT’ and the Quran Sharif (Surah-Shura 42 Ayat 1) ‘Ain-Seen-Qaaf’ direct for three stage Naam Initiation to accomplish salvation.
- Samved Mantra no. 822, Samved Utarchik Adhyay 3 Kand no. 5 Shlok no. 8 states that the Primordial Eternal Supreme God Kavir Dev Ji (Kabir Saheb) assumes a human form, appears as a Guru , gives three stage mantras to a devout soul, purifies him to release from birth and death cycle, and increases his countable life-breaths. As a result, devotees attain real happiness by His blessings.
The first two mantras ‘OM-TAT’ (coded) is Satnaam as described by Shri Nanak Dev Ji and Shri Garib Das Ji. ‘OM’ relieves from Shaitan’s trap and the ‘TAT’ (coded) takes to the eternal world.
- Yajurveda Adhyay 19 Mantra 26, 30 recognizes Satguru who teaches His disciples to worship three times in a day, to maintain good conduct and dignity, prohibits non vegetarian food and intoxicating substances, accepts charity from His initiated disciples and does not wander about asking for alms and donations.
- Identification of Tatvadarshi Sant is given in Shrimad Bhagavad Gita (chapter 15 slokas 1-4), as who interprets each part of the upside-down hanging tree is Satguru. The Root of that tree is the Almighty God Kabir, Param Akshar Purush/ Satpurush who nurtures the whole universe.
The bigger trunk is Akshar Purush / ParBrahm and the branch is kshar Purush / Kaal- Brahm or Jyoti Niranjan (both In cycle of birth and death). Three small branches depicting three Gunas are the prime cause of binding the soul in karmas and compel to take rebirth. Three Gunas (Rajogun-Brahma, Satogun-Vishnu, and Tamogun-Shiva) and vices (lust-Kaam, anger-Krodh, greed-Lobh, affection-Moh, arrogance-Ahankar) all are created by Prakriti (Bhagavad Gita chapter 13 shloks 19,21). The leaves are the living beings in the material world.
The Almighty Kabir Saheb disclosed the same in his Doha in Suksham Ved.
“Kabir, Akshar Purush ek ped hai, Niranjan (Brahm) vaaki daar |
Teeno deva shaakha hain, paat roop sansaar ||”
- Sat Granth Sahib (Amar Granth Sahib) identifies Satguru with his knowledge of holy scriptures. Satguru Garibdas Ji says in His nectar speech, A true saint is the complete knower of pious 4 Vedas, 6 shastras, 18 Puranas, Shrimad Bhagawad Gita, Quran Sharif, Bible, etc. and he is the one who will explain their essence.
“Satguru ke lakshan kahoon, madhure baen vinod |
Chaar ved shat shastra, kahae athaara bodh || ”
Suksham Ved goes to the extent that the contemporary religious gurus stand in Satguru’s opposition, and mislead the ralers and the public to inflict atrocities on Him. Kabir Saheb tells His beloved disciple Dharmdas.
“Jo Mam Sant Sat Updesh Drdaavae (Batavae),
Vaake Sang Sabhi Raad Badaavae
Ya Sab Sant Mahantan Ki Karni,
Dharmdas Main To Se Varni”
Yardsticks For Determining A Satguru
The holy scriptures (defined as above) gives us three yardsticks to establish someone as a Satguru.
- Satguru Imparts Eternal Spiritual Knowledge (Tatvagyan)
- Well acquainted with the holy scriptures of all religions and imparts knowledge substantiated by the holy scriptures with proof.
- Elaborates the encrypted sentences of scriptures by deciphering them.
- Discloses all parts of the upside-down world’s eternal tree and distinguishes Param Akshar Brahm, Akshar Brahm and Kshar Brahm, Prakriti and Trinity Brahma – Vishnu – Shiva and the living beings.
- Frees from the karmic entanglement, the soul’s attachment and helps in liberation.
- Bestows a single way of devotion irrespective of devotee’s religious beliefs and faith.
- Initiates through three mantras (Naam Diksha) and teaches the correct method to recite.
- Edifies to worship three times in a day.
- Satguru Applies Moderation on Self and His Disciples
- Practices self and preaches the same to disciples the acts of bhakti (worship) substantiated with holy scriptures.
- Trains His disciples for good conduct, prohibits non vegetarian food and intoxicating substances.
- Never discriminates on any basis of superiority, richness, education, cast, creed, color, faith or religion
- His contemporary religious gurus stand united against Satguru, mislead innocent citizens and inflict atrocities on Him.
- Satguru Accepts Charity From Disciples Only
- Accepts charity from His initiated disciples only. (Yajurveda Adhyay 19 Mantra 30)
- Does not wander about asking for alms and donations.
High Accumulated Wealth Diminishes Chances of Satguru
These incomes are contributed by their disciples and hugely by non-disciples. Since Satguru can not accept charity from non-disciples, any wise seeker will simply reject them.

Considered a saint by her devotees, Mother Meera has nothing to do with any particular religion or spiritual practice, rather she defines the purpose of her work as “calling down the Supreme Light (Paramatman Light) and helping people.”

He is the kathavachak or religious narrator of Shrimad Bhagwat Katha and collects funds through it. He gives the mantra for recitation. He preaches that all humans are children of the same God who take birth again and again to bear the fruits of Karma. Swami Ji follows Shakti (Prakriti or Nature) and Shiva (Kaal Brahm) therefore misses salvation obtained through the reverence of Supreme Almighty so he can not be judged as Satguru.
Note: There are a number of prestigious kathavachak or religious narrators such as Morari Bapu Ji, Rameshbhai Oza Ji, Sadhvi Ritambhara Ji, Goswami Mridul Krishna Ji, Shri Devkinandan Thakur Ji, Acharya Shashikant Bhardwaj Ji, Jaya Kishori Ji, Acharya Gaurav Krishna Goswami Ji, Devi Chitralekha Ji, Shri Indresh Upadhyay Ji, Shri Chinmayanand Bapu Ji, Rajendra Das Ji, Shyam Sundar Parashar Ji, Shri Krishna Chandra Thakur Ji, and Anirudh Acharya Ji. There is no benefit of cramming the aforementioned entire shabd (hymn) and by doing such sadhana salvation is not possible. Hence Kabir panth Damakheda and all its affiliated branches are far away from truth and can not be termed as Satguru.
Note: Similarly Madhu Param Hans – Jammu, Seat of Ardhnam Saheb in Varanasi, Kabir gaddi in Maghar, their respective seats in Surinam, Holland, Mauritius etc, Sect of Parkhi Sant Dharmendra Das (After demise of Abhilash Das), Kabir Panth by Madan Pati and many smaller Kabir Panths in various other Indian states such as Gujarat, Odisha etc and other countries do not give correct initiation (Naam Diksha) and hence all are far from eternal truth and hence does not qualify as Satguru.

He’s fun-loving, loves his music, loves talking about economics, politics, philosophy, and loves watching films. These are certainly not Guru’s characteristics.
The Sect’s originator Shiv Dayal Singh Ji had no spiritual Guru and was addicted to Hookah. The five mantras are not confirmatory to Bhagavad Gita (BG 17:23). Stubborn practice of meditation is also prohibited in scriptures. For all these reasons Dhillon can not be qualified as SatGuru.
Note: The readers must know that other sants related to Sant-Mat such as Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan of Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS), Kanwar Saheb Ji Maharaj of Radha Soami Satsang, Dinod (RSSD), Sant BalJit Singh in the Sant Mat lineage saint, , Prof Prem Saran Satsangi Sahab of Radhasoami Satsang Dayalbagh, Sant RaJinder Singh Ji Maharaj of Sawan Kirpal Ruhani Mission and Science of Spirituality (SOS) also come in the same category, therefore did not find a separate place in this article.

Based on hate-speech laws, Naik’s Peace TV channel has been banned in India, Bangladesh, Canada, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom.

The first Guru of Sahaj Marg did not have any Guru and had taught transmission (Pranahuti) to his disciples out of self inspiration. The 2nd Guru was intoxicated with Hookah, and the 3rd Guru supported this act and wrote a book “He,The Hookah and Me”. SRCM has OM-TAT-SAT on its emblem but they don’t know the process of reciting. SRCM gives discriminating services to disciples based on their paying capacity. Hence Kamlesh D. Patel, the current and 4th Guru whose spiritual path is completely non-aligned with the true eternal spiritual knowledge and practices, cannot be regarded as Sat guru.
