Nursing in India from Ancient Times

India has been a land of original wisdom including medicine since ancient times. In Ramayana and Mahabharat times nursing has been often visible on occasions of childbirth and wars. Sushruta is known as the father of Surgery in India who happened in 600 BCE. The great surgeon of ancient India had taught that the cure depends upon four pillars of medicine that are, the physician, the nurse, the patient, and the drugs.

It will be interesting to learn that the first nursing school in India was established by Acharya Charak in 250 BCE. Acharya Charak, the main contributor to the ancient science of Ayurveda, preferred to select only male nurses.

Nursing in Modern India

In the mid-1600s, a military hospital run by East India Company in Kolkata had to call nurses for a London based hospital. Two centuries later in 1865, Florence Nightingale detailed work designed the nursing system for hospitals in India. It was her wisdom that guided the reform of nursing with a new set of parameters, procedures, and model that is followed all over the world even today.

Florence Nightingale architect of modern nursing (History)

Florence Nightingale, considered as the originator of modern nursing, was born on May 12, 1820. Nightingale’s contribution made the field of public health remarkable. She was first in Europe to grasp the principles of the new science of statistics and to apply them to hospitals. After the Crimean war, her nickname became ‘The Lady with the Lamp’. She had served the wounded in the Crimean war. After this war, her fame began to spread to England. She died on August 13, 1910, at the age of 90.

International Nurses Day

It is the same Florence Nightingale whose birth anniversary, the 12th May is aptly commemorated as ‘International Nurses Day’. It is on record that just around the same day in 1867 first nurses’ training school was opened for Indian women in modern India.

There were two colleges of Nursing in Delhi and Vellore running a 4-year bachelor’s degree course. In independent India, in 1960 a master’s degree course was started in the Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing in New Delhi. Since then the nursing profession in India has flourished and has certainly come a long way.

After independence, India has expanded its Nursing services and capacity building considerably. The nursing profession has taken a shape of pride and respect. In India, nurses have become the largest workforce in the healthcare industry. The roles and responsibilities of nurses have become multi-fold over the years.
