World Sports Day Video [2024] | The ancient Olympic Games, originating in 776 BCE in Olympia, Greece, were a tribute to the Olympian gods, hosting various athletic contests like running, wrestling, and chariot racing. Lasting nearly 12 centuries, they ceased in 393 CE under Emperor Theodosius I. Fast forward to 2020, the Tokyo Olympics, held from July 23 to August 8, 2021, amidst challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Japan’s emergency measures safeguarded participants and citizens, allowing for the successful execution of 33 sports events, featuring 339 medal opportunities. Among them, surfing, skateboarding, sports climbing, karate, and baseball made their Olympic debut.
India sent a delegation of 127 athletes, including 56 women, to compete. Spectators from abroad were barred due to the pandemic. Japan, hosting for the third time, introduced mascots Miraitowa and Someity, embodying traditional and technological aspects. Women’s participation in the Olympics traces back to the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, where 20 women competed across various sports.
