International Day of Peace History & Background
The UN General Assembly founded the International Day of Peace in 1981. The UN General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the day as a period when countries exercised nonviolence and cease-fire 20 years after it was formed. The United Nations initially designated the third Tuesday in September as International Peace Day in 1981. The United Nations General Assembly convened on this date to begin its work. In 2002, the date of International Peace Day was shifted to September 21.
It’s possible to achieve world peace, but it takes time. Most societies have been peaceful for most of history. We now have a far lower chance of dying in combat than previous generations did. Unless they are acting in self-defense or have been permitted to do so by the UN Security Council, nations have been bound by the UN Charter not to use force against others. In a world of peace, life is better, and today, we look to those who have made and kept the peace to learn how we can all make the world a better place individually.
International Day of Peace 2021: Significance & Aim
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 will encourage us to think creatively and cooperatively about how to assist everyone to recover better, how to develop resilience, and transform our world into one that is more equal, just, inclusive, equitable, sustainable, and healthy.
The pandemic has a history of disproportionately affecting disadvantaged and marginalized populations. More than 687 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered worldwide by April 2021, but over 100 nations are still without the vaccine. People who are caught up in a crisis are particularly at risk because they do not have easy access to healthcare.
In response to the Secretary-call General’s call for a worldwide ceasefire in March of last year, the Security Council unanimously endorsed a resolution in February 2021 asking the Member States to support a ‘sustained humanitarian halt’ in local conflicts. The worldwide ceasefire must be maintained for individuals caught up in the war to have access to vital immunizations and treatments.
The Pandemic Resulted in a Loss of Peace
The pandemic has been accompanied by an increase in discrimination, stigma, and hatred, which has only resulted in the loss of more lives rather than the saving of any. The virus attacks everyone, regardless of where they are from or what they believe in. To defeat this common foe, we need to remember that we are not one another’s foe.
After the pandemic’s devastation, we must make peace with one another if we have to rebuild our lives and society. We also have to find harmony with the natural world. Despite travel bans and economic shutdowns, climate change continues unabated. To cut emissions, create jobs, and increase climate resilience, we require a green and sustainable global economy.
International Day of Peace 2021 Theme
A more equal and sustainable world will be the focus of International Day of Peace celebrations in 2021. Everyone is welcome to join the United Nations family in its efforts to better recover for a more equitable and peaceful world. Celebrate peace by standing up against hate crimes both online and offline, and by sharing compassion, kindness, and optimism both during the pandemic and after it has passed is the theme of International Peace Day 2021.
International Day of Peace 2021 Events & Celebration
Beyond healthcare, International Peace Day is being used to raise awareness about climate change and global warming, which are posing an immediate threat to the environment. According to a UN statement, “peace with nature” is a must. There is no reversal in climate change, according to the United Nations, which urged its members to create a global green and sustainable economy that creates jobs, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and fosters resiliency against the growing climatic consequences.
From 10:00-11:30 a.m. EDT on September 17th, 2021, Youth Observance of International Day of Peace has been observed. Students from all over the world joined UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the Messengers of Peace, and others to celebrate the 2021 International Day of Peace online.
Apart from it, the ‘Peace Bell Ceremony’ was also observed between three and three-thirty on Friday the 17th of September 2021, EDT. During the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, UN Secretary-General António Guterres and UNGA President Abdulla Shahid rang the Peace Bell and observed a minute of silence in the Peace Garden at UN Headquarters to commemorate the International Day of Peace. H.E. Mr. Ishikane Kimihiro, Japan’s Permanent Representative, also attended the ceremony.
Best Way to Gain Peace of Mind
Spirituality is the best way to gain a peaceful mind and harmony. Through the right devotion to the Supreme God, integrating and providing stability can give extreme peace to our minds. It is by being entirely engrossed into the essence of the Word, and the fixity of attention on the Absolute, blesses us with the state of self-forgetfulness.
