Former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe Assassinated | On Friday, former Japanese Prime Minister ABE Shinzo passed away. ABE Shinzo had an outstanding leadership and execution ability, took on the weighty responsibility to bring policy changes and international reputation. He was the longest serving PM in Japan’s constitutional history. Japanese police officials have arrested a 41-year-old on suspicion of killing.

Former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe Shot Dead

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, 67, died at 5:03 p.m. local time (1:33 p.m. IST) Friday. He was rushed to Nara Medical University’s hospital by helicopter in a cardiopulmonary arrest. Abe was shot in the chest at close range. At that time, he was giving a public speech for the official candidate of the Liberal Democratic Party at around 11:30 a.m. local time (8:00 a.m. IST) in front of Yamato-Saidaiji Station in the western prefecture of Nara. The House of Councilors election was scheduled for Sunday.  He was bleeding from his neck and chest. It is the first murder of a former Japanese prime minister since the end of World War II.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said to reporters at the prime minister’s office in Tokyo, that the shooting was “absolutely unacceptable” as a “cowardly criminal act during a campaign for an election, which is a cornerstone of democracy.” Statement by Prime Minister Kishida on the Passing of Former Prime Minister ABE Shinzo said,

“Today, as the result of a sudden, outrageous act, former Prime Minister ABE Shinzo has passed away. The despicable act that took the life of Mr. ABE Shinzo, carried out in the middle of an election, the very basis of democracy, is absolutely intolerable, and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms.

Possessing outstanding leadership and execution ability, Mr. ABE Shinzo, at the risk of his own life, took on the weighty responsibility of being prime minister for the sake of Japan, which faces a severe state of affairs both domestically and internationally. He did so over a total of eight years and eight months, the longest period in our constitutional history.”

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Assassinated: 41-Year-Old Attacker Arrested On The Spot

The man, who attacked the former PM, was seized at the scene. The report says, Nara prefectural police arrested the suspect identified as Tetsuya Yamagami on the spot. The attacker is a 41-year-old resident of the city of prefecture’s capital Nara. He is believed to be a former military member having served in the maritime self-defense force for three years around 2005. The suspect told the police that he was dissatisfied with the former PM Abe and chose to shoot him down. The suspect was just 10 feet away from Abe and shot two times that hit in his chest.

It is said that the killer did not attempt to escape from the spot. Instead, he kept his gun on the floor and waited for the security personnel to arrest him. He was wearing a gray T-shirt and brown trousers. Some reports say the suspect used a shotgun but some say that the sound of the firing did not match that of the gun.

  • “Stunned, outraged, and deeply saddened” by the assassination, US President Biden called Abe his friend. “His vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific will endure.”
  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken described the assassination “profoundly disturbing.” Blinken is presently attending a Group of 20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Asia labeled Abe as a leader of great vision.
  • India declared July 9 would be a day of national mourning in honour of Abe. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted describing Abe as “a towering global statesman, an outstanding leader, and a remarkable administrator.”
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin conveyed his “deepest condolences” to Abe’s mother, Yoko and wife, Akie. He called him an “exceptional politician” who contributed significantly to Russo-Japanese ties and said his memory would remain in his heart.
  • Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott described him simply as Japan’s “most significant post-war leader.”
  • UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, “I had the privilege of knowing him for years & will always remember his collegiality & commitment to multilateralism.”
  • Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said, “China is shocked,” Abe had “made contributions to promoting the improvement and development of China-Japan relations.”
  • South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol office said, “I send my words of consolation and condolences to the bereaved family and Japanese people, who lost the longest-serving prime minister and respected politician.”
  • European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen described “brutal and cowardly murder” and a “wonderful person, great democrat and champion of the multilateral world order has passed away.”
  • New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described Abe as “always focused, thoughtful and generous.”
  • Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha praised Abe as “a key driver to the bilateral relationship between Thailand and Japan.”
  • Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “deeply saddened,” “The world has lost a great man of vision, and Canada has lost a close friend.”
  • Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson said his leadership through times of geopolitical uncertainty “will be remembered by many.”

Who Was Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe?

Shinzo Abe, born on 21 September 1954 and died on 8 July 2022 was a Japanese politician. He belonged to a political family who ruled Japan for three generations.  He belonged to the Liberal Democratic Party which remained in power for a long time. Abe was the longest-serving prime minister of Modern Japan.
  • Abe was elected to the House of Representatives in the 1993 election.
  • He served as prime minister of Japan from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020.
  • Abe also served as Chief Cabinet Secretary from 2005 to 2006 under Junichiro Koizumi.
  • He was briefly the leader of the opposition in 2012.
  • Resigned because of poor health in August 2020.
  • The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP or Jimintō) dominated Japanese power almost continuously since it was founded in 1955.
  • His grandfather Nobusuke Kishi remained Prime Minister of Japan from 1957 to 1960.
  • His father, Shintaro Abe, also served as chief cabinet secretary.
  • Abe transformed a nation by extending international power. He revived the stagnant Japanese economy, and his economic policies were called “Abenomics.
  • Abe promoted a “three arrow” strategy, a combination of monetary easing with support of the Bank of Japan, enhanced government spending and a growth strategy that encourages private sector investment to revitalize lost growth.
  • Abe went beyond its long-standing security alliance with the United States. He established a good relationship with India. Abe was instrumental in making the Quad with Australia, India, Japan, and the United States to balance China’s power. He improved trade deals with Australia when the United States withdrew.
  • Abe passed laws that permitted Japan’s Self-Defense Forces to battle alongside allies overseas. This action frightened South Korea and infuriated China.
  • Abe opposed China against its aggression in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • Abe favored Taiwan and encouraged the United States to protect it from any Chinese attack. Japan supported Taiwan with vaccine doses when it was struggling with a coronavirus outbreak. Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen called him a “good friend.”
  • Abe developed a close bond with President Donald Trump. When Trump became USA’s President, Abe was the first foreign leader to meet him in 2016. Trump was the first foreign leader to meet Japan’s new emperor, Naruhito.
  • Abe’s successor, Yoshihide Suga, could remain in power only a year in office due to his failure to deal with the coronavirus pandemic. The current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was selected due to Abe’s implicit support.
