India-Sri Lanka agreement was the cause of death of former PM

• Riots broke out in Sri Lanka in July 1983 after 13 soldiers were killed, leading to large-scale violence against Tamils and the beginning of civil war.
• In 1987, then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi signed the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord, under which India deployed the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) to Sri Lanka to oversee peace efforts and the surrender of the LTTE.
• Although some LTTE members initially surrendered, tensions soon emerged between the LTTE and the IPKF over issues related to disarmament, treatment of Tamils, and the Sri Lankan government’s actions. The conflict eventually turned violent, bringing the LTTE and Indian forces into direct confrontation.
• After a change in government in India, the IPKF was withdrawn in 1990. However, Rajiv Gandhi continued to support the India-Sri Lanka Accord and a united Sri Lanka, which the LTTE viewed as a threat to its objectives.
• Believing that Rajiv Gandhi’s return to power would weaken their movement, the LTTE plotted his assassination. On May 21, 1991, during a Lok Sabha election rally at Sriperumbudur, a suicide bomber associated with the LTTE killed Rajiv Gandhi in a blast.

Killer Perarivalan released after 30 years

The Supreme Court, in exercise of extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution, issued an order to release former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassin A.G. Perarivalan on 18 May 2023. Perarivalan was convicted along with three of his other accomplices in the former prime minister’s assassination case and had been serving a prison term for the past 30 years. 

In May 1991, during an election rally, a woman blew herself up with a bomb, which claimed the life of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Later, Along with Perarivalan, Murugan, Santhan and Nalini were sentenced to life imprisonment.
