British Govt has imposed complete lockdown in Britain until mid-Feb due to the rise of a new strain of the virus which is more infectious.
As per the statement given by a spokeswoman from the Downing Street Office, Boris Johnson called Narendra Modi and regretted not being able to visit India planned in late January.
The spokeswoman also added that “In light of the national lockdown announced monday night, and the speed at which the new coronavirus variant is spreading, the prime minister said that it was important for him to remain in the UK so he can focus on the domestic response to the virus.”
Background of Strain
- The new UK virus variant, named “VUI – 202012/01”, includes 23 genetic mutations in the “spike protein”.
- The new strain is seventy percent more transmissible than previous versions.
- In India, 58 people are tested positive with the new UK strain and twenty fresh infections were reported yesterday.
When Is British PM Boris Johnson Likely to Visit India Next?
UK PM Boris Johnson has given a clear indication that he hopes to visit India in the first half of 2021 and before the G7 summit is hosted by the UK, where PM Narendra Modi is due to attend as a guest, planned for later this year.

Significance of Visit — Bilateral Relations Development
Both the leaders share the commitment towards the bilateral relationship and build close collaboration between two countries. Earlier in December, Boris Johnson accepted the invitation to visit India. This visit was about to be marked as his first major bilateral visit since taking office in 2019.
At that time Boris Johnson wrote below words to Narendra Modi in his formal acceptance letter.
“I am absolutely delighted to be visiting India next year at the start of an exciting year for Global Britain, and look forward to delivering the quantum leap in our bilateral relationship that Prime Minister Modi and I have pledged to achieve.”
He stated India as a key player in Indo-Pacific region. He also mentioned India as an essential partner for the UK to work upon accelerating growth and jobs and also to combat shared threats to their security.
