Monkeypox Virus India: Monkeypox is a zoonotic viral disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans. The symptoms of the disease are usually far less serious than those of smallpox, but they still can be quite significant. The virus is mainly spread through the skin-to-skin contact of an infected person or from clothes, bedding, or objects recently contaminated from the patient. Symptoms include fever, severe headache, muscle and back aches, general fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and a distinct rash starting on the face and spreading to other body parts. The rash passes through several stages before forming scabs that may come off.

Monkeypox Virus India: AIIMS Delhi has issued a detailed advisory, which outlines a structured approach for suspected Monkeypox case management with emphasis on early detection, isolation, and infection control.

Screening and Early Identification

The guidance also recommends that patients presenting with a febrile rash illness who within the last three weeks have been in contact with confirmed Monkeypox cases, should be identified for further investigations. The earlier a disease is detected, the better the chances of preventing its transmission and an epidemic spread within healthcare and community settings. The symptoms of the infection – therefore, these must be watched closely – include fever, headache, myalgia, backache, generalised lymphadenopathy, and the typical rash, with its progression to vesicles and pustules.

Isolation Protocols

AIIMS is a well-equipped hospital and has been able to establish isolation wards for suspected Monkeypox patients in the AB-7 ward by designating a total of five beds. These are the temporary measures till the time the patient is transferred to Safdarjung Hospital which is equipped to provide definitive care. This isolation is crucial to preventing transmission of an infectious agent and achieving the needed level of care.

Referral and Transport

A referral mechanism is in place with the Safdarjung Hospital for further management and treatment of suspected cases. Quick, safe transport of patients with minimal risk of exposure to others is assured by a dedicated ambulance service. The emergency staff will inform the ambulance coordinator to shift the Monkeypox patient to Safdarjung Hospital on the mobile number +91-8929683898.

Healthcare workers should notify suspect cases immediately by calling Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) at +91-8745011784, giving clear details of the patient from the personal information to clinical findings and contact information.

Infection Control Measures┬а

The disease is transmitted in a very severe manner, hence the need for stringent measures for infection control. Health workers who come into contact with the suspected case should at all times wear their PPE. Effective coordination requires thorough documentation of patient information, clinical features and also the referral process.

Implications for India’s Public Health System

Monkeypox Virus India: The proactive steps from AIIMS, Delhi are a part of a larger preparedness plan adopted across India. Special isolation wards are to be established, coordinated with specialised hospitals, and protocols for stringent infection control have been initiated, to protect patients and contribute to global strategies involved in the management of Monkeypox.

This cooperation between AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital could set examples for other regions in India and across the world. It is, thus, an excellent example of how new infectious diseases can be coordinated through collaboration between related parties in preventing a wider outbreak.

Monkeypox Virus India: Recently, AIIMS Delhi gave an advisory on how to handle suspected mpox cases with the detailed procedure and asked hospitals in DelhiтАФLok Nayak, GTB, and Baba Saheb AmbedkarтАФto keep isolation rooms for suspected and confirmed cases. Though no case has been reported in India so far, these measures show proactive concern over the lurking threat.

The announcement by WHO also highlights the call to action for quick, efficient containment of growing health threats. The AIIMS Delhi protocol includes the screening of patients for symptoms and contact history; use of isolation areas for the management of suspected cases before transfer to Safdarjung Hospital.

Monkeypox Virus India: The country’s Serum Institute of India (SII) is working on developing a vaccine for Monkeypox to help the nation in tackling the outbreak. This advance move is a symbol of learning from the COVID-19 outbreak. The country is adopting strategies in its fight against Monkeypox in India, including AIIMS Delhi’s protocols and vaccine development by SII for short-term and long-term protection.

Monkeypox Virus India: No cases of Monkeypox infection have been reported in India so far, but this situation highlights the necessity for early preparedness and a coordinated response by surveillance agencies; isolation and infection control measures applied properly at AIIMS Delhi proved how important it is to be prepared for any public health threats. This approach could set the tone to deal with public health emergencies in the future globally.

  • The last decade has witnessed a meteoric rise in epidemics and new diseases. Despite commendable scientific advances in the development of medicines, what is the reason for newer epidemics and the pandemic, gripping the world like never before?
  • The COVID-19 vaccine too, served more like a thin-filmed shield than a robust warrior-like shield. Why were vaccines rendered ineffective?
