The Government of Delhi has approved the ‘Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana,’ aimed at strengthening girls’ education and financial security. In a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, it was decided to discontinue the Ladli Scheme, which has been in force since 2008, and introduce a revised framework under a new name.

According to the government, eligible beneficiaries will receive financial assistance at various stages of their education, with the total benefit amounting to nearly ₹1 lakh, including interest. The new scheme will come into effect from April 1, with a budget allocation of ₹160 crore.

From Ladli Scheme to Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana

The Delhi Government has announced a major restructuring of its flagship scheme for girls. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the Ladli Scheme will be formally discontinued on March 31, and the Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana will take effect from April 1.

During a press briefing, the Chief Minister noted that the Ladli Scheme, launched in 2008, provided a total of ₹36,000 in phased deposits into bank accounts, payable upon maturity. However, more than one lakh accounts remained unclaimed under the scheme.

Following the formation of the BJP-led government, around 31,000 beneficiaries were identified and ₹90 crore was released. Additionally, 41,000 more beneficiaries have been identified, and ₹100 crore is being disbursed to them on the completion of the government’s first year in office.

Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana: Cabinet Decision and Financial Structure

Officials confirmed that the Cabinet approved the transition of the Ladli Scheme into the ‘Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana’ in its latest meeting. Under the revised structure, the base assistance has been increased from ₹36,000 to ₹56,000.

With interest and stage-wise incentives added, the total financial benefit is projected to reach approximately ₹1 lakh per eligible beneficiary.

Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana: Objective and Government’s Intent

Addressing the media, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the government aims to ensure that no girl in Delhi discontinues her education due to financial constraints. The revised scheme is designed to enhance financial support and simplify eligibility norms.

Officials added that the objective is to promote continued education and financial independence among girls, while encouraging higher education participation.

Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana: Phase-Wise Disbursement Structure

Under the Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana Delhi 2026, the government will deposit ₹56,000 in phases, which will accumulate to nearly ₹1 lakh with interest. The amount will be transferred directly into the girl’s Aadhaar-linked bank account.

The phase-wise assistance is structured as follows:

• At birth: ₹11,000
• On admission to Class 1: ₹5,000
• On admission to Classes 6, 9, 10 and 12: ₹5,000 per class
• Upon completion of graduation or diploma: ₹20,000

The final amount will be released once the beneficiary turns 21 years of age or completes graduation or a diploma course.

Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana: Eligibility Criteria and Conditions

The scheme will be available to girls who meet the following criteria:

• Born in Delhi
• Family must be a resident of Delhi for at least three years
• Annual family income must not exceed ₹1.20 lakh
• Maximum of two daughters per family eligible
• Full immunisation mandatory
• Enrollment in a recognised school required
• Marriage before the age of 18 not permitted

The government has clarified that beneficiaries pursuing graduation or diploma courses outside Delhi will also remain eligible.

Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana: Action on Unclaimed Ladli Accounts

The Chief Minister stated that several accounts under the Ladli Scheme had funds deposited but remained unclaimed. A special identification drive was conducted to trace beneficiaries, resulting in the release of substantial pending amounts. Remaining beneficiaries will receive their dues in the coming period.

The Delhi Government has earmarked ₹160 crore for the implementation of the scheme. Officials indicated that the funds will be utilised for expenses related to girls’ education, social security, and direct financial assistance.

Detailed operational guidelines and eligibility procedures are expected to be notified shortly following Cabinet approval. The government has also indicated that the budget may be enhanced if required.
