1.Major depressive disorder: Characterised by a persistent loss of interest or depressed mood that significantly interferes with normal activities for at least two weeks.

2. Seasonal affective disorder: Depression that typically begins in the fall or early winter and continues until spring or summer.

3. Persistent depressive disorder: Involves depressive symptoms that are generally less severe than those in major depressive disorder but last for an extended period, usually at least two years.

4. Depression with psychosis: Depression is accompanied by symptoms of psychosis, such as hallucinations or delusions.

5. Perinatal depression: Depression that starts during or after pregnancy.

  • Low mood
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities
  • Significant changes in weight or appetite
  • Excessive sleep (hypersomnia) or lack of sleep (insomnia)

The exact cause of depression is not fully understood, but several factors may contribute to its development:

  • Brain chemistry: An imbalance of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine can play a role in depression.
  • Genetics: Having a first-degree relative with depression increases your risk, but it’s possible to develop depression without a family history.
  • Stressful life events: Traumatic experiences such as the loss of a loved one, divorce, or prolonged periods of stress can trigger depression.
  • Medical conditions: Chronic illnesses like diabetes or chronic pain can increase the risk of depression.
  • Medication and substance use: Some medications have depression as a side effect, and substance abuse, including alcohol, can worsen or cause depression. 

While there is no scientifically confirmed cure for depression as it is a mood related disorder yet medicines and psychotherapy have been shown to be useful in most cases.
