7.4 Quake Shakes Japan: An Earthquake Shook The Coast of Fukushima

On March 16, 2022, at 23:36 local time, an earthquake shook the coast of Fukushima, Japan. The quake measured 7.4 magnitude, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Residents of Fukushima and Miyagi are putting their lives in order after facing threats from a quake that struck the northeastern coast of Japan, knocking out power to more than 2 million users across the nation and injuring 97 people, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said in a parliamentary session.

Earthquake in Japan: The Japan Meteorological Agency later withdrew its low-level tsunami warnings released off the coast of Fukushima and Miyagi counties early Thursday. The 11-inch tsunami reached the shores of Ishinomaki, about 240 miles northeast of Tokyo. The agency maintained the magnitude of the quake to 7.4 from the original 7.3, and the depth from 37 miles below the sea to 35 miles.

It’s the same region of Japan that was hit by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami 11 years ago that caused the nuclear plant meltdown, emitting large amounts of radiation that left some parts uninhabited.

7.4 Quake Shakes Japan: The USGS Tectonic Summary

The U.S. Geological Survey, National Institute for Earthquake Information has provided a summary. On March 16, 2022, Magnitude 7.3 earthquake near the east coast of Honshu, Japan, occurred due to thrust faulting in or near the boundary of the subduction zone plate between the Pacific and North America plates. Moment tensor solutions indicate that the slip has occurred in the moderately dipping fault hitting the south, or the north, corresponding to the expected east-west congestion in this region.

At the site of this earthquake, the Pacific plate moves almost westward compared to the North American plate at a speed of about 70 mm / year, lowering Japan in the Japan Trench and sinking westward under Japan. Note that some researchers divide this region into several microplates that describe the corresponding movement between large plates in the Pacific, North America, and Eurasia; these include the microplates of Okhotsk and the Amur region in this earthquake that is part of North America and Eurasia, respectively.

7.4 Quake Shakes Japan: 33 Earthquakes Seen In Past One Century

The March 16 earthquake preceded the M6.4 foreshock about 2 minutes earlier. The M7.1 earthquake occurred approximately 15 km east of these events in February 2021. The events of March 16 occurred near the collapsed M9.1 Tohoku earthquake on March 11, 2011. The earthquake of M9.1 in March 2011 was widely reported on the islands of Honshu and Hokkaido in Japan. Significantly, that quake caused a massive tsunami that swept across the coast of Japan and spread across the Pacific Ocean.

About 16,000 people died as a result of the earthquake and the tsunami that followed. The March 16 earthquake struck ~ 100 km from the earthquake site in March 2011. In the last century, 33 earthquakes of M7 or higher intensity have occurred about 250 km after the March 16 earthquake, including the 7 quake > M7 since the M9.1 earthquake in March 2011.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority of Japan said a fire alarm sounded at building number 5 in Fukushima Daiichi, but there was no fire. The water pumps of the oil cooler used at two of the four levels in Fukushima Daini have stopped but have resumed operations. Fukushima Daini, a survivor of the 2011 tsunami, has also been suspended.
