Every year on December 5, World Soil Day is observed to highlight the importance of healthy soil. The date is significant because soil nutrient loss is a major soil degradation process that jeopardizes nutrition.
World Soil Day 2022: Highlights
- Soil provides 95 percent of our food.
- A tablespoon of soil contains more living organisms than people on Earth.
- Plants require 18 naturally occurring chemical elements. Soils provide 15.
- To meet global food demand in 2050, agricultural production will need to increase by 60%.
- Sustainable soil management has the potential to increase food production by up to 58%.
World Soil Day 2022: Theme
The theme of World Soil Day 2022 is “Soils: Where Food Begins.” The goal of the day is to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being by addressing growing challenges in soil management, increasing soil awareness, and encouraging societies to improve soil health.
World Soil Day: History
The International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) first proposed the day in 2002. The UN General Assembly declared 5 December as the official World Soil Day in 2014.
World Soil Day: Background
World Soil Day (WSD) is observed every year on December 5 to draw attention to the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources.
The International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) proposed an international day to celebrate soil in 2002. FAO has supported the formal establishment of WSD as a global awareness-raising platform under the leadership of the Kingdom of Thailand and within the framework of the Global Soil Partnership. In June 2013, the FAO Conference unanimously endorsed World Soil Day and requested that it be officially adopted at the 68th UN General Assembly.
World Soil Day 2022: Significance
Soil degradation, caused by soil salinization and modification, is a threat to the ecosystem and a global threat to agricultural production, food security, and sustainability. As a result, World Soil Day is critical for advocating for the long-term management of soil resources.
What if everyone becomes Vegetarian?
God created the universe with His word power. He created trees and plants in sufficient quantities on this earth so that Humans and Animals could be nourished. God also gave seeds and sufficient land to humans to do farming. There is no dearth of fertile land on this earth. Even if the whole world becomes vegetarian and depends on agriculture, there can be no shortage of food.
God Ordered Living Beings to Stay Vegetarian
In Holy Bible Genesis 1:29 and 1:30 God has ordered all the living beings including Animals, Birds and others to become vegetarian. God has given seed-bearing plants, trees and fruit yielding seeds to us, which shall be our food. God provided green herbs for everything that creeps on the earth.
■ Genesis 1:29
And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
■ Genesis 1:30
And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
Hence it is proved that God has provided green plants for every living being. And it is God who fulfills every demand of the living beings residing in this mortal world.
