In 2013, after a cloudburst over Kedarnath, Uttarakhand had seen one of the worst floods in its history. Thousands of people, including pilgrims and locals, lost their life. A glacial break in the Tapovan Reni area of Chamoli District of Uttarakhand on Sunday led to massive flooding in Alaknanda and Dhauli Ganga Rivers, wrecking houses, and the nearby Rishiganga power project. Sources said there were one hundred laborers on the barrage at Rishi Ganga of which at least fifty are feared dead. About one hundred and twenty-five people are missing, according to the latest reports, even as fourteen bodies have been fished out, while 15 have been rescued.

Glaciers Burst in Uttarakhand
At around 10:45 hours a flash flood arose in river Rishiganga due to the falling of glaciers in the river which exponentially expanded the volume of water. Due to this, the Rishiganga hydro project near Raini village was completely devastated. There were 6 graziers with their livestock and they were also taken away by a flash flood.
Flood Washed Away Roads, Houses and NTPC Power Project
The BRO bridge on Joshimath-Malaria highway was also entirely washed away. Rishiganga meets Dhauli Ganga near Raini. So Dhauli Ganga also got flooded. 5-6 houses of the village were also washed away. There was an NTPC project on the river Dhauli Ganga near Tapovan. The entire project was completely devastated. 2 Jhulla bridges connecting villages and towns on the other side of the river also washed away,’ an ITBP official said.

ITBP, SDRF, & NDRF Teams Got Engaged in Rescue
According to the sources, National Disaster Response Force teams stationed in Uttarakhand have left for the spot. Squads from ITBP, which has a base at Joshimath, about 26 km from Reni, along with units of the State Disaster Response Force have also reached the spot. The Tapovan Tunnel, where many laborers are trapped, has been completely blocked by debris. ITBP teams are removing the debris to rescue the trapped laborers.
Another ITBP spokesperson Vivek Pandey said, ‘As of now it seems the worst is over as the downstream flow in Alaknanda does not seem to be very detrimental and is under control. 3 teams of ITBP personnel, around 250 men, are engaged in rescue at the moment.’
Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat Announced Aid for the Deceased
The state government of Uttarakhand has announced financial aid of Rs four lakh each to the kin of the deceased, Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat said. CM Rawat, who has hurried to the spot, said in a series of tweets that those living near Alaknanda River are being evacuated even as flow in the Bhagirathi river, which meets Alaknanda at Devprayag to form Ganga, has been halted.
‘To manage the flow in Alaknanda, the reservoirs at Rishikesh and Srinagar have been vacated,’ Rawat said in one of his tweets.
PM Modi & HM Amit Shah Also Looked Into This Matter
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted:
‘Am continuously monitoring the tragic situation in Uttarakhand. India stands with Uttarakhand and the country prays for everyoneтАЩs security there. Have been constantly speaking to senior administrations and getting updates on rescue work, NDRF deployment, and relief operations.’
Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to NDRF DG SN Pradhan, CM Rawat, and ITBP DG SS Deswal to take care of the situation. He said additional units of NDRF are being hurried to the spot from Delhi by airlifting them.
‘We are frequently monitoring the situation. All apprehensive officers are working on war footing to safeguard people. All possible help will be provided to Devbhoomi,’ Shah said in a tweet.
