Former PM in ICU at AIIMS

Manmohan Singh Health News Update: Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh complained about cardiac complications late evening on Sunday. He was then admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), a premier medical center in the country. Dr. Singh, 87, is under observation in Cardio neuro center at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) CT2. According to the hospital he is treated by a team of doctors headed by professor of cardiology Dr. Nitish Nayak and all his parameters are fine.

Long history of ailments

Dr. Singh had a history of diabetes and had prostate surgery in September 2007 and had a cataract operation in May 2008. He has heart problems for quite long, and he underwent a bypass in the UK in 1991. Again, Mr. Singh had gone for coronary by-pass surgery at AIIMS in 2009.

Many prominent leaders such as Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Maharashtra Minister Aditya Thackeray, Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, Former Jammu, and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav expressed their best wishes for early recovery.

Two tenure Prime Minister of a huge democracy

Dr. Manmohan Singh is a senior leader of the main opposition party, Indian National Congress. Presently he is a Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha from the state of Rajasthan. He served as the 13th Prime Minister between 2004 to 2014. By profession, Dr. Singh is an eminent scholar of economics. He is a doctorate in economics from Oxford University.

He worked with the United Nations from 1966 to 1969. Dr. Singh joined the Government of India in the Ministry of Commerce as Economic Advisor in 1971. He remained governor of Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985 and headed Planning Commission from 1985 to 1987.

Successful FM but weaker governance as PM

He was inducted as the Finance Minister of India in 1991 by the newly elected Prime Minister Narasimha Rao when India was facing a severe economic crisis. Dr. Manmohan Singh took bold decisions and successfully liberalized the economy and received world fame. A successful and world fame finance minister did not receive the same repute as Prime Minister.

In his second term, his government faced several charges of corruption including Commonwealth Games in 2010, 2G Spectrum allocation case, and coal blocks allocation. He was never blamed personally but he was always criticized for weak governance.

Upon request of Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, Dr. Manmohan Singh accepted to guide in formulating the state’s post-COVID revival strategy.
