Fire Breaks Out at Coaching Centre Building in Aliganj

A massive fire broke out at a building housing a coaching centre in Lucknow’s Aliganj area on Monday, leading to one of the city’s deadliest fire incidents in recent times.

According to reports, the fire spread rapidly through the building, trapping several people inside. The blaze continued for more than an hour before fire personnel managed to bring it under control.

Authorities later recovered at least 15 bodies from the site after firefighting operations were completed.

The building was located in a busy commercial area and housed multiple establishments apart from the coaching centre.

Students Attempted to Escape as Flames Spread

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the fire engulfed the building.

Several students were reportedly trapped inside after the blaze erupted. Witnesses said some students jumped from the first floor in desperate attempts to save themselves. Different eyewitness accounts provided varying estimates of those who jumped from the building.

According to one witness, five to seven students jumped during the incident. Another account stated that eight students jumped amid the blaze.

One witness told local media that when he reached the spot, smoke was billowing from the building. He said some students had already been rescued, while four to five students managed to come out on their own.

Another witness described the structure as a three-storey building and said the fire started on the top floor before spreading rapidly.

Dramatic Rescue Efforts Captured on Video

Visuals from the scene showed the intensity of the situation as people attempted to escape.

One video reportedly showed a man trying to climb out of what appeared to be a shattered window. He attempted to hold onto a ledge but lost his grip and fell onto a fence before hitting the ground.

People nearby were seen helping him and carrying him away from the area. Reports said he suffered injuries and was undergoing treatment.

Unverified videos circulating on social media also showed a youth falling from the first floor amid flames near a railing while local residents rushed to assist him.

Witnesses stated that some windows of the building were shattered during rescue efforts.

Building Housed Multiple Commercial Establishments

The building involved in the incident contained several establishments besides the coaching centre.

Reports stated that it housed:

  • A gaming zone
  • A pet accessories shop
  • A pet clinic
  • A pet shop
  • Other commercial stores

One report described the building as housing an animation centre, while officials and fire department personnel also referred to a coaching centre operating within the premises.

Rescue Operations Continued Amid Heavy Smoke

Police and fire department teams reached the location soon after receiving information about the incident.

According to a fire department official, information regarding the blaze was received from a coaching institute located on Usha Mehta Marg under the Aliganj police station area. Fire tenders were immediately dispatched and rescue operations were launched.

A police official said local police teams responded quickly and additional firefighting units arrived from nearby stations with water tenders and equipment.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak visited the site and monitored rescue and relief operations.

Pathak stated that eyewitnesses were providing different estimates regarding the number of people who might still be trapped.

According to him, friends of rescued students indicated that two to four children might still be inside the building. Fire personnel searched rooms and bathrooms and reached the top floor but initially did not find anyone.

He also said rescue teams entered the building through an adjoining structure after breaking a wall because heavy smoke was making operations difficult.

Authorities later confirmed that the search operation had been completed and no children remained trapped inside.

Medical authorities provided details about those brought to hospitals following the incident.

Dr. Anil Agrawal, Medical Superintendent of the Trauma Centre at KGMU, said that 21 to 22 children were brought in after the incident.

The government also assured affected families that all necessary assistance would be provided.
