  • The earthquake struck at 11:14 PM local time on April 17th, 2024.
  • The epicentre was located in the Bungosuido Strait.
  • Distinct tremors felt across Ehime, Kochi, and Oita Prefectures.
  • The seismic intensity was classified as a weak 6 on Japan’s scale of intensity.
  • Although the earthquake didn’t cause major damages, minor damages have been reported.
  • As the earthquake caused minor damages and along with it no threat of tsunami has been given by the concerned department.

  • A Magnitude of 6.4 on the scale of 1 to 7 of Japan’s Meteorological Department (JMA), an Earthquake occured on 17th April 2024 at around 11:14pm.
  • Traditionally, earthquakes in Japan often unleash devastating tsunamis.
  • Yet, this recent earthquake resulted in only minor damage and thankfully, no tsunami alerts were issued.
  • However, the impact reverberated through regions surrounding the Bungo Suido Strait, notably in Ehime, Kochi, and Oita Prefectures, where residents experienced varying degrees of tremors.
  • This Bungo Suido Strait is also called the Bungo Suido Channel and is found to be the epicentre of this earthquake.
  • The epicentre is located approximately 18 km west of Uwajima with a depth of 25 km.
  • This channel separates the two islands of Kyushu and Shikoku.
  • Ainan Town, Sukumo City and Uwajimia City felt the major tremors of the earthquake.
  • This earthquake comes days after a severe earthquake that caused destruction to life and property in Taiwan. The tremors were felt in China and Japan as well.
  • No fatalities have been reported in the aftermath of the earthquake.
  • However, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi acknowledged minor injuries to several residents and minor property damage during a press conference shortly after the event.
  • Additionally, Shikoku Electric Power’s Ikata Nuclear Plant in Ehime Prefecture reported no damage, providing a sigh of relief amid the seismic activity.
  • Japan experiences nearly 1500 earthquakes annually due to its location in one of the world’s most seismically active regions, where four tectonic plates incessantly collide.
  • This relentless tectonic activity keeps the nation on edge, as most earthquakes trigger a tsunami in Japan.
  • The devastating earthquake that struck on March 9, 2011, unleashed a massive tsunami, marking one of Japan’s darkest moments in history.
  • With a magnitude of 9 on the Richter scale, the earthquake triggered a catastrophic nuclear crisis, compounding the already immense destruction brought by the ensuing tsunami.
  • Known as the Great Sendai or the Great Tohoku Earthquake, it stands as Japan’s most devastating earthquake, measuring a magnitude of 9 on the Richter scale.
  • The earthquake hit Japan’s Honshu region along the northeastern coast.
  • It triggered a catastrophic tsunami, resulting in a major nuclear accident at a power plant.
  • This tragedy inflicted widespread devastation, particularly in coastal areas like Tohoku, claiming over 15,500 lives and displacing more than 450,000 people.

In the wake of natural disasters, world leaders often emphasise the importance of preparedness, echoing sentiments like an immediate call for vigilance. However, amidst life’s unpredictability, it’s clear that mere preparation isn’t enough to shield us from calamity.
