On October 31, 2003, the General Assembly approved and adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption and petitioned that the Secretary-General appoint the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as the secretariat for the Convention’s Conference of States Parties. The Assembly furthermore designated December 9 as International Anti-Corruption Day to raise understanding and awareness of Corruption and the role of the Convention in battling and preventing it. The Convention entered action in December 2005.

Importance of International Anti-Corruption Day

As per United Nations statistics, every year, 1 trillion US dollars is compensated as bribes, while an estimated 2.6 trillion US dollars are stolen annually through Corruption, which is equivalent to more than one percent of the global GDP. Apart from this, as per the United Nations Development Program, the reserves lost to Corruption in developing countries are estimated at ten times the number of their official development assistance.

The private sector, governments, non-governmental organizations, the media, and citizens worldwide are assembling forces to fight this Corruption. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) are at the vanguard of these undertakings.

International Anti-Corruption Day 2023 Theme

The theme for International Anti-Corruption Day 2023 is “UNCAC at 20: Uniting the World Against Corruption“. The 2023 International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD) seeks to highlight the crucial link between anti-corruption and security, and development. At its core is the notion that tackling this crime is the right and responsibility of everyone, and that only through cooperation and the involvement of each and every person and institution can we overcome the negative impact of this crime.

States, government officials, civil servants, law enforcement officers, media representatives, the private sector, civil society, academia, the public and youth alike all have a role to play in uniting the world against corruption.

What did UN Secretary-General say on Corruption?

‘Corruption is immoral, criminal offence, and the absolute betrayal of public trust. It is even more adverse in crisis times as the world is encountering now with the COVID-19 Epidemic. The reaction to the virus is establishing new opportunities to manipulate weak surveillance and inadequate translucency, deflecting funds away from people in the times of their greatest need.’ Said UN Secretary-General António Guterres, on Corruption in the context of COVID-19.

How does Corruption Impact?

Corruption ambushes the organization of democratic institutions by perverting the rule of law, altering electoral processes, and establishing bureaucratic quagmires whose only justification for prevailing is the soliciting of bribes. Economic development is hindered because foreign direct investment is discouraged, and small businesses within the nation often find it impossible to overcome the start-up expenses required because of Corruption.
