What Is the Coast Guard?

The Coast Guard was an organization made up of people from all over the world that provided maritime security while also looking after the country’s needs. History of Indian Coast Guard Day

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) was founded by the Union Cabinet on 1st February 1977 under Coast Guard Act 1978. However, it was officially established on 19th August, 1978 by Prime Minister Morarji Desai. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) functions under the Ministry of Defence. As per the GOI’s press release of 2024, ICG has 152 ships and 78 aircrafts and plans to increase it to 200 surface platforms and 100 aircrafts by 2030.

Coast Guard Officer Ranks Explained

Officer ranks in the Coast Guard are named the same as those in the Central Armed Police Forces. Officers in the Coast Guard are assigned to one of four branches: general duty, pilot officer, technical officer, or law officer.

Lady Coast Guard Officers

General-Duty Officers and Pilot Officers are two types of Lady Officers who work on shore establishments, air stations, and headquarters. They are not stationed on Indian Coast Guard vessels. 

Indian Coast Guard Officer’s Ongoing Operation

Officers of the Indian Coast Guard are currently undergoing Basic Military Training at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, alongside their Indian Navy counterparts. This facilitates the exchange of officers between the two sister services. The Indian Coast Guard Academy is being built in Mangalore, Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district.
