WHO Explains ‘Disease X’

The lady in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was tested for various diseases, including Ebola, but they all came out as negative. It spurred worries that her disorder may have been caused by ‘Disease X’, a new unusual pathogen that could spread as rapidly as the coronavirus disease but has a fatality rate of 50 to 90% which is as deadly as Ebola. 

Every year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) revises its list along with direction from all arenas of the scientific study of which pathogens pose a danger to the magnitude of causing the next global pandemic. While the planet is still reeling under the consequences of the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic, it has also been through other major epidemics of global proportions like the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Zika, and Ebola viruses in the past decade and half. 

Nevertheless, another new strain of virus called ‘Disease X’ might be on the anvil, and specialists with knowledge claim that it could be a severe pandemic caused by a pathogen currently unknown to cause human disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said in 2018: Disease X, where ‘X’ stands for unexpected, is speculative for now, an eruption that scientists and public health experts fear could lead to severe disease around the world if and when it occurs.

Professor Jean Jacques Muyembe Tamfum Warned Against Disease X

‘We are now on a planet where new pathogens will come out. And that’s what comprises a danger for humanity’, said Professor Jean-Jacques Muyembe Tamfum, who helped discover the Ebola virus in 1976.  When inquired if any new illness could be more apocalyptic than Covid-19, he said: ‘Yes, yes, I think so.’

Muyembe has cautioned that many more zoonotic illnesses or those that jump from animals to humans could originate. Covid-19 is among those ailments as well, along with rabies and yellow fever, which are also thought to have arisen from an unknown reservoir or the term used to indicate a virus’ biological legion in the animal territory.

Professor Muyembe operates the National Institute of Biomedical Research which is the planet’s early warning system for new eruptions of known diseases like Ebola Virus, and perhaps more importantly for those illnesses scientists are yet to discover. ‘If a pathogen ensued from Africa it will take time to dissipate all over the world. So, if this virus is observed early like in my establishment where there will be a chance for Europe and the rest of the world to formulate new techniques to fight these new pathogens’, said Muyembe.

SARS-CoV-2, which results in the coronavirus disease, is believed to have originated in China and conceivably from bats. Specialists have largely associated the eruption of zoonotic diseases with deforestation which makes animals’ natural habitats disappear.
