On Wednesday 3rd November 2021, WHO approved Covaxin Vaccine for emergency use and added it to its Emergency Use Listing (EUL). With its approval people of the 18+ age group are recommended to take this while for children and pregnant ladies it is still not recommended.

Covaxin Vaccine Approved by WHO as EUL

On Wednesday Indian make Covaxin Vaccine which was developed by a Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech company (in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Institute of Virology (NIV)) in the fight against Covid-19 gets its approval for Emergency Use from World Health Organization (WHO). This vaccine was administered by WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) along with The Technical Advisory Group (TAG) having experts from around the globe and has certified that Covaxin is capable enough to fight against Covid-19 by maintaining all WHO standards.

TAG is an independent advisory group that basically recommends whether a vaccine is suitable for emergency or not by performing all their required procedures. Covaxin Vaccine which is expected to be given in 2 doses with a gap of 4 weeks has been accredited by WHO for the people of 18+ age groups. The applicability to children and pregnant women is still not recommended. The vaccine develops 78 percent effectiveness against Covid-19 and is thus prescribed for emergency use.

Most Awaited Accreditation

The Bharat Biotech has been working very hard to obtain the accreditation for its indian covaxin by meeting all their necessary requirements in terms of safety, efficacy, effectiveness and immunogenicity parameters. Last month also in the SAGE review meeting, the Indian vaccine maker company presented a 25 minutes presentation about the clinical data of phase 1,2 and 3 along with highlighting the above said points as their post marketing part. 

They submitted all the necessary documents on July 9 to the World Health Organization regarding the approval and it was expected to arrive early but was delayed as WHO revealed that the studies related to clinical tests are required to be testified with 100% confirmation before giving it to the common people for emergency use. 

Covaxin Vaccine News Update: Union Health Minister Credited PM Modi for the Feat

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya thanked WHO for granting the accreditation and gave all the credits to the efforts of PM Modi in achieving this feat. He called it a ‘win for Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and mentioned PM Modi in one of his tweets. PM Modi also urged WHO at the G20 Summit at Rome to approve Indian vaccines at the earliest.

The Union Health Minister also believed that it was the effort from the Prime Minister himself that he maintained the supply of vaccination to the Indian citizens and ensured its maximum vaccination which is why 120 million doses of vaccination are completed today. And it was his vision to see a completely vaccinated Covid-19 free nation which is on the verge of completion.

With validation from WHO it has now become an open opportunity for the nation to pounce upon it and raise its name in this sector worldwide. With EUL approval as a prerequisite being done, it has now become very easy for the countries to manage approvals and exports across nations regarding the shipment of medicines.
