Doyen kathak dancer Birju Maharaj died in the early hours of Monday at his Delhi house, surrounded by his disciples and family. His granddaughter Ragini Maharaj said they were playing ‘antakshari’ after dinner on Sunday when he became ill. Swaransh Mishra, his grandson, confirmed the news on social media. He posted a picture of the Kathak legend to his Instagram account. ‘With profound grief and sorrow, we inform you of the sad and untimely demise of our most beloved family member, Pt. Birju Maharaj Ji,’ he wrote.
On the 17th of January 2022, the noble soul departed. The Maharaj family is bereft of hope. Next month he would have turned 84 years old.

Brijmohan Nath Sharma’s journey from Brijmohan Nath Sharma to Birju Maharaj was not easy. Trained by his father Acchan Maharaj and uncles Lachchu Maharaj and Shambhu Maharaj, he worked tirelessly to refine the dance form and take it from Aminabad’s narrow lanes to the international proscenium. His father died when he was 13 years old, and he grew up with his uncles watching over him.

Because Delhi lacked large performance spaces, he would frequently cycle to teach at Sangeet Bharti and perform for hours in private gatherings.
