International Anti-Corruption Day History 

On October 31, 2003, the General Assembly approved and adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption and petitioned that the Secretary-General appoint the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as the secretariat for the Convention’s Conference of States Parties. The Assembly furthermore designated December 9 as International Anti-Corruption Day to raise understanding and awareness of Corruption and the role of the Convention in battling and preventing it. The Convention entered action in December 2005.

As per United Nations statistics, every year, 1 trillion US dollars is compensated as bribes, while an estimated 2.6 trillion US dollars are stolen annually through Corruption, which is equivalent to more than one percent of the global GDP.
