Girls Continue to Perform Better Than Boys

Female students once again outperformed male students in the CBSE Class 12 examinations. The board data showed that girls surpassed boys by 6.73 percentage points this year.

The trend of girls recording better results than boys has continued in the 2026 examination session as well. Reports also noted that more than 94,000 students scored above 90 per cent in the examination.

Among Children With Special Needs (CWSN) candidates, the pass percentage stood at 90.16 per cent.

Trivandrum Emerges as Top Performing Region

Trivandrum recorded the highest regional pass percentage in the country at 95.62 per cent. Chennai followed with 93.84 per cent, while Bengaluru secured 93.19 per cent.

Vijayawada stood fourth with a pass percentage of 92.77 per cent. Delhi West and Delhi East recorded pass percentages of 92.34 per cent and 91.73 per cent respectively.

Experts Explain Reasons Behind Decline in Pass Percentage

Education experts attributed the decline in the overall pass percentage to multiple factors rather than a single reason.

Jyoti Arora said that the slight decline may have resulted from “stricter and more competency-based evaluation practices” along with a “greater focus on conceptual understanding under NEP 2020.”

She further stated that it would be premature to link the trend only to On-Screen Marking or evaluation methodology. According to her, the examination pattern indicated a gradual shift from rote learning to application-based assessment.

Praneet Mungali said that the adoption of OSM had introduced more rigour into the evaluation process and reduced human error, which could be a reason behind the change in pass percentage.

He added that a clearer conclusion could only be drawn after studying result trends over the next few years and comparing them with pass ratios before the introduction of OSM. He also described OSM as the right way forward.

On-Screen Marking and Digital Evaluation System

The CBSE board used the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system during the 2026 evaluation process. Reports described the move as a significant change in the board’s assessment system.

The board has also moved toward a fully digital evaluation process from 2026. According to reports, CBSE stated earlier that there would be no post-result verification of marks for Class 12 examinations due to the increased transparency and accuracy expected from digital evaluation.

Experts said the new evaluation process aimed to strengthen conceptual learning and reduce dependency on rote memorisation.

Board Continues Policy of Not Releasing Merit List

The CBSE board did not release a merit list this year as well. Reports stated that the decision was aimed at discouraging unhealthy competition among students.

At the same time, reports mentioned that students placed in the top 0.1 per cent category would receive merit certificates.

Changing Evaluation Patterns Reflect Shift in Assessment

The 2026 CBSE Class 12 results highlighted a broader transition in the board’s evaluation approach. Experts pointed toward competency-based assessment, conceptual learning under NEP 2020, and digital evaluation practices as major factors influencing the outcome. While the overall pass percentage declined this year, education experts indicated that long-term trends over the coming years would provide a clearer understanding of the impact of On-Screen Marking and the board’s evolving assessment model.
