Energy Infrastructure Projects Strengthening the North-East

Energy security forms a major component of the development initiatives being launched during the Prime Minister’s visit.

One of the key projects being dedicated to the nation is the 150 MW Kopili Hydropower Project, constructed at a cost of more than ₹2,300 crore. The project is expected to:

  • Enhance clean energy generation
  • Improve grid stability in the region
  • Ensure reliable power supply for households, farmers and industries

Another major initiative is the Capacity Enhancement Project of the Numaligarh–Siliguri Product Pipeline (NSPL) undertaken by Oil India Limited.

This project will facilitate the expansion of the Numaligarh Refinery from 3 MMTPA to 9 MMTPA by enabling the evacuation of additional petroleum products.

The Numaligarh Refinery is also supplying diesel to neighbouring Bangladesh during global disruptions caused by the conflict in West Asia. Under a long-term agreement, India is supplying 180,000 metric tonnes of fuel through a 131 km cross-border pipeline, with approximately 5,000 metric tonnes of diesel currently being pumped to Bangladesh.

Northeast Gas Grid and Petroleum Infrastructure

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate Phase 1 of the Northeast Gas Grid, a major pipeline network designed to strengthen the region’s energy infrastructure.

The gas grid connects several important locations including:

  • Guwahati
  • Numaligarh
  • Gohpur
  • Itanagar

A branch pipeline will also extend to Dimapur.

In addition, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for Numaligarh Refinery Limited’s Rail-Fed POL Terminal at Panchgram in Hailakandi district.

These projects are expected to strengthen the petroleum supply chain and enhance overall energy security in the North-East.

Road Infrastructure Projects in BTC Region

Infrastructure development in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) area is another major focus of the visit.

The Prime Minister will perform the Bhoomi Poojan for Assam Mala 3.0, a road infrastructure initiative worth over ₹3,200 crore.
