Arnab Goswami Arrested News Updates: Republic TV owner and editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami was arrested on Wednesday by Maharashtra Police in connection with a 2018 suicide case. • The court has sent Arnab Goswami, editor-in-chief of Republic TV, to 14 days judicial custody till 18 November.  
• The court rejected the demand for police remand.

Why Arnab Goswami Arrested Now?

In 2018, an architect and his mother allegedly committed suicide due to non-payment of their dues by Republic TV of Goswami. A police official said that Goswami, the editor-in-chief of Republic TV, was arrested by the Alibag police from Mumbai on charges of abetting the 53-year-old interior designer to suicide. 

Arnab Goswami said he was brought to Alibaug Police Station and was “physically assaulted.” 

Helping Family of Naik, Maharashtra Government Claims 

In May this year, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh announced to order a re-investigation based on a new complaint by Adnya Naik, the daughter of architect Anvay Naik.

Deshmukh had said that Adnya alleged that the Alibaug Police did not investigate Goswami’s channel for non-payment of dues. He claims that this is the reason his father and grandmother committed suicide in May 2018.

Nationwide Arnab’s Arrest Is Criticized

The arrest of Arnab Goswami has been condemned by journalist organizations and many leaders including Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar. Javadekar said that

it is “an attack on freedom of the press” in Maharashtra and it reminds of the “Emergency Days”.

The News Broadcasters Association (NBA) said that although it does not agree with Goswami’s “journalistic style”, the organization condemns it if the authorities have taken any “revenge action” against the media editor.

Naik’s Family Claims That Investigation Was Suppressed

Family members of designer Anvay Naik, who committed suicide in 2018, allegedly claimed that the channel’s editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami had tried to suppress the investigation after Republic TV allegedly did not pay the dues.

Family of Naik Spoke to Media

Talking to reporters, Naik’s daughter Adnya Naik and his wife Akshita Naik claimed that they had sent applications to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Superintendent of Police of Raigad to provide justice.

 In a conversation with journalists, Adnya and Akshita denied any kind of politics in the case.  He thanked the police for the action against Goswami and requested an impartial inquiry.

Ms.Naik said:

“We sent applications to many people, including the Prime Minister’s Office and the Superintendent of Police of Raigad, to get justice for our father.” 

“The investigation was suppressed because of Arnab Goswami,” she alleged. “We only want my dead father to get justice,”

she added

Meanwhile, Akshita Naik said that she is grateful to Maharashtra Police for taking action against Goswami.

Suicide Notes Held Three Names Responsible

Naik’s wife said “Maharashtra police is well competent to investigate the matter. My husband had written the names of three persons including Arnab Goswami in the suicide note, but no arrest was made then. He committed suicide because the accused did not pay their proper dues. “

Police had said that Anvay Naik, the owner of ‘Concord Designs Pvt Ltd’, wrote in the ‘Suicide Note’ that Goswami, Feroz Sheikh of ‘iCastex / Schemedia’ and Nitish Sarada of ‘Smart Works’ failed to pay the dues and because of this he is committing suicide.

Police said that according to the suicide note, Naik was to be given Rs 83 lakh, Rs 4 crore and Rs 55 lakh by these three companies respectively.

Arnab Ranjan Goswami (born 7 March 1973) is an Indian news anchor, who is the managing director and editor-in-chief of Republic Media Network. His news channel Republic TV was launched in May 2017. Goswami’s Republic Media Network, presently owns and operates two channels namely Republic TV in English and Republic Bharat in Hindi.

Before Republic TV, Goswami was the editor-in-chief and a news anchor of Times Now and ET Now, from 2006 to 2016.
